Smoothie King's Latest 'GLP-1 Support Menu'—Key Insights for Those Using Obesity Medications

Smoothie King has introduced a new “GLP-1 Support Menu” tailored for people using GLP-1 receptor agonists, like Ozempic and Wegovy, for weight loss and diabetes management. The menu includes five smoothies designed to help with weight loss and maintenance by providing ingredients that promote a feeling of fullness and support muscle mass. Each smoothie contains at least 20 grams of protein, is high in fiber, and has no added sugar.

This menu was developed by Smoothie King in collaboration with Molly Kimball, a registered dietitian from Ochsner Health, to align with health trends and the increasing use of GLP-1 drugs. Survey data indicates that one in eight Americans have used a GLP-1 medication, with 6% of U.S. adults currently on one.

Molly Kimball and her team consulted nearly 70 experts, including obesity specialists and dietitians, to understand the nutritional challenges faced by patients on GLP-1 medications. They learned about common issues like muscle loss and insufficient protein, fruits, and vegetables. The smoothies were made with these factors in mind, providing an alternative to high-carb snacks. They’re not exclusive to those on GLP-1 medications and can be a healthy choice for anyone.

The menu offers five smoothies, all with zero added sugar. According to Richard Siegel, an endocrinologist, these smoothies can be effective meal replacements for those aiming to lose or manage weight, as they are high in protein and fiber, which contribute to a feeling of fullness. He appreciates the plant-based ingredients and notes that their low-fat content could be beneficial for people experiencing side effects from GLP-1 drugs. Siegel advises drinking them slowly due to their liquid nature, as the body’s hunger signals usually activate 15-20 minutes after starting a meal. He wouldn’t recommend consuming smoothies for all meals but believes they are suitable for long-term weight management.
