Popular Protein Powder Recalled Nationwide Following Customer’s Allergic Reaction

A batch of Orgain’s chocolate-flavored, plant-based protein powder has been recalled due to an allergy risk, as announced by the FDA on Thursday. Orgain took this action after a customer experienced an allergic reaction to peanuts. The FDA indicated that the batch might contain undeclared peanut residue, posing a serious threat to individuals allergic or sensitive to peanuts.

There haven’t been any additional reports of allergic reactions related to this protein powder. The specific product being recalled is a 30g Protein Organic Plant Based Powder – Chocolate, with a weight of 2.01 pounds, an expiration date of June 20, 2026, and a lot code of 4172-02-P. This batch was distributed across the country, available both online and in retail stores like Whole Foods, Costco, Kroger, and Walmart.

The FDA advises customers to immediately stop using this protein powder and to reach out to Orgain for a refund. Other batches of this chocolate protein powder and Orgain’s other products are not affected by the recall. Orgain reports that a thorough review of the production process for this batch found no issues.

Allergic reaction symptoms can vary from mild to severe and often occur within two hours of allergen consumption. Mild reactions might present as skin issues, which can be treated with cool compresses, hydrocortisone cream, or oral antihistamines like Benadryl. If symptoms persist, seek medical assistance.

Severe allergic reactions, known as anaphylaxis, are medical emergencies. Signs can appear seconds or minutes after exposure to the allergen. If anaphylaxis is suspected, call 911 immediately. If available, administer emergency allergy medication, such as an epinephrine injection like an EpiPen, while waiting for medical help.
